He was the son of a man who went to Australia during the gold rush and sold dry goods. He made a lot of money and then came back to the UK , married a woman who was 16 ( he was in his 30’s) and had 24 children ( 18 survived ). He ran a green grocers in Fulham ( to feed the 18 children !)
